The Future of Subscriptions: How Machine Payments Could Change the Internet? Online subscriptions became the default business model of the internet because there was no practical alternative. Machine payments may change that. Most discussions about machine payments focus on AI agents. But the larger opportunity may be much closer to everyday internet users. As protocols like x402, MPP, and APP mature, software could move from selling access to selling outcomes. Instead of paying $20/month for a tool: • $0.02 for a document analysis • $0.05 for a generated image • Pay for individual actions instead of monthly access Less plans. Less registrations. No forgotten subscriptions. Will subscriptions disappear? No. But they may stop being the only viable way to monetize digital products. In this new article I share a perspective on how machine payments could reshape online subscriptions, software monetization, and the broader internet economy. Full article 👇
The agent economy is starting to look a lot like the early internet. A growing list of protocols can seem confusing, especially with similar names: MCP, A2A, ACP, UCP, x402, MPP, AP2, AG-UI, ERC-8004... They're becoming layers of a new stack. Just as the internet needed protocols for communication, payments, discovery, identity, and trust, agents need the same things. • MCP for tools and data access • A2A for agent-to-agent communication • x402 and MPP for payments • Bazaar, MCP Registry, and others for discovery • AP2, Verifiable Intent, and TAP for authorization and trust Major players are independently building different pieces of the same puzzle: Coinbase, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Stripe, Visa, and Mastercard. The industry is converging on a shared vision.
