Afternoon pick-me-up: fresh mango chunks on a croffle and the only instant coffee I like to drink. Last year I spent a week at the Sofitel in Hanoi, a French colonial hotel with a fascinating history. It hosted the 2019 Trump and Kim summit, among other major diplomatic events over the years. My friends and I are avid coffee drinkers. We all found the hotel coffee outstanding. When we asked what they used, they showed us little black and red instant powder packets called G7, made by Trung Nguyên Coffee Company. I thought they were kidding until I learned more about it. G7 tastes better than other instant coffees because of a proprietary roasting and powdering process. Their processing plant was built by Italian coffee technology experts. The instant coffee led to Trung Nguyên dominating the Vietnamese market. The company’s founder (“Chairman Vũ”) follows a spiritual practice he created around coffee (“Coffeeism”). He also owns Vietnam’s largest car collection, which includes 10 Ferraris.
