People in San Francisco are so self-conscious of being perceived as performative that they’re now performing performances of the very ordinary act of reading.

I have many thoughts about the labeling of “performative reading” that I’d like to publish in a book titled Performative Reading, which people can performatively read in public.

Building a little space at /thenextwave and watching everything on /videolab.

i feel like this is positive in a roundabout way. like maybe accepting the possibility of being seen as performative is healing in the long run

It does warm my heart that this led to a social gathering in these times of higher reported loneliness.

However, I would say not all things are intentionally performative. Person sitting in public with a book hoping someone will notice - yes. Person sitting in public with a book hoping no one will interrupt - no.

Sometimes people just need to get out of the house but still want to read.

Anything done in front of others is performative. Maybe’s embracing the performative meme is a cure to loneliness

It happened earlier today in Dolores Park. They should have you at the next one taking “candid” portraits of people reading. I think San Franciscans would deeply enjoy such an event.

That’s peak modern culture right there, everyone’s trying so hard not to look like they’re performing that it becomes another kind of performance. Honestly, your book idea would expose that perfectly.
