People in San Francisco are so self-conscious of being perceived as performative that they’re now performing performances of the very ordinary act of reading.

I have many thoughts about the labeling of “performative reading” that I’d like to publish in a book titled Performative Reading, which people can performatively read in public.

Anything that leads to people reading and spending time together is positive in my book.

i feel like this is positive in a roundabout way. like maybe accepting the possibility of being seen as performative is healing in the long run

Thought provoking i love it. Tbh may be it is mitocondria, hormones and oxygen and the rest is performative living.

It does warm my heart that this led to a social gathering in these times of higher reported loneliness.

However, I would say not all things are intentionally performative. Person sitting in public with a book hoping someone will notice - yes. Person sitting in public with a book hoping no one will interrupt - no.

Sometimes people just need to get out of the house but still want to read.

Anything done in front of others is performative. Maybe’s embracing the performative meme is a cure to loneliness

It happened earlier today in Dolores Park. They should have you at the next one taking “candid” portraits of people reading. I think San Franciscans would deeply enjoy such an event.

I had a friend move from LA to SF saying it drove him crazy how there were influencers blocking the way on trails with their performative hiking. 😂  Every city has its performers - just different shows.

I think my post unintentionally made it seem more serious than it really was. It's really just people having fun and getting together under a cheeky event title.

My issue is more with the hyper-awareness around being "performative" in general, not this specific event. Could just be me being old and it's always been around, but it feels like such a part of the vocabulary nowadays in a way that didn't before social media.

Were they perhaps made fun of? I wonder what brought about the need to do this
