Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin cautioned that a blockchain’s key security assurance is that even a 51% attack cannot turn an invalid block into a valid one, meaning colluding validators are unable to steal users’ assets. However, he clarified that this guarantee doesn’t apply off-chain in external trust situations, if 51% of validators act together, users are left without recourse.
