Our local humane society has a “trap and release” program (or had, they ran out of funding and I guess the local economic development agency doesn’t help them anymore with grants) that would spay and release feral cats caught in the wild around neighborhoods if they couldn’t be adopted. It’s similar to the nuclear screwworm option- switch off the capacity for reproduction and hope the population generations age out at least to a manageable level. Feral cats do a nice job of keeping a lot of rodents away from some of the mobile home areas in the community, but too many becomes a problem especially when they can’t really be domesticated or tamed consistently for rescue-adoption to solve.
