Before Spanish colonization, the Inca Empire celebrated Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, every June solstice. It honored Inti, the sun god, who was central to Inca cosmology. Though the festival was banned by Spanish authorities, it has been revived in Cusco as a theatrical reenactment blending tradition and modernity. Locals dress in elaborate Inca-inspired costumes, ceremonies are held at Sacsayhuamán fortress, and rituals simulate ancient practices of gratitude to the sun. Inti Raymi isn’t just a performance; it reconnects Peruvians with their ancestral roots while also educating global visitors about pre-Columbian civilizations.
