Zama’s journey has not been without obstacles. One of the biggest hurdles lies in the technical complexity of Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). By nature, FHE is extremely slow and resource-intensive compared to standard computation, making it difficult to use in real-world blockchain and AI applications. Scaling encrypted computations to handle large volumes of data while still keeping performance acceptable for end users has been a constant challenge. Another difficulty is accessibility. FHE is a highly specialized field in cryptography, which made it hard for most developers to adopt. To address this, Zama had to invest heavily in building user-friendly frameworks, tutorials, and open-source libraries to lower the entry barrier. Zama also faced market challenges.
