The Lost City of Heracleion — Egypt’s Atlantis
For over a thousand years, the city of Heracleion was just a name in ancient Greek texts. Many believed it to be a myth, like Atlantis. But in 2000, archaeologists discovered its remains submerged off the coast of Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea.
Once a thriving port city around the 6th century BCE, Heracleion controlled trade between Egypt and the Greek world. Over time, rising sea levels, earthquakes, and soil liquefaction caused it to sink beneath the waves. The preserved ruins include massive statues, temples, coins, and everyday items, offering a rare glimpse into ancient life.
