By the end of the 1970s, the market for 8-bit processors was overcrowded. Crystals from Intel, Motorola, and MOS Technology were selling well. In addition, clones of these processors were widely available, often differing from the original models in significantly improved characteristics.
Two leaders emerged among processor manufacturers: Intel and Motorola. At the same time, IBM and Apple began competing in the ready-made computer segment.
The period of 16-bit processors ended rather quickly, and 32-bit versions appeared in the early 1980s.
