Cologne, Germany — Dominated by its extraordinary Gothic cathedral — begun in 1248 and not completed until 1880 — Cologne is one of Germany's oldest and most important cities. A Roman colony founded in 50 AD, it was for centuries the largest city north of the Alps. The cathedral survived the devastating Allied bombing of 1943–45 almost intact, surrounded by a sea of rubble.
