My least favorite thing about how they tax is that they break it down into chunks with different names to trick you into paying more, and then take it automatically without you ever knowing how much you really pay - Income - NI Contribs - Employer's NI - VAT

fig 1: UK total tax revenue (#3 in the world at a small fraction of the population of #1 and #2) fig 2: the vibe when living there this makes very little sense to pretty much anyone I talk to

on all the popular apps if feels like every front page piece of content is meticulously engineered, whilst here things seem to blow up almost by accident and I think that’s a good thing

My personal issue with this idea, and it spans all 3 parts that you made distinct, is that you cannot possibly see the outside world other than as a projection through the lens of what’s inside (Kant). It is no doubt influenced by whatever “shit” you find inside. If what inside is “shit” then what is outside will also be smeared with it. Whether you choose to ignore it or to investigate your own consciousness, I think the distinction itself between what is inside and what is outside isn’t so clear or trivial to escape

Your body knows what it wants. What to eat, how much to eat, how much to sleep, rest, play, etc. Sensors / wearables are a psyop to make you tolerate living in conditions that flood the zone physiologically

Whether he is right or wrong depends on what fits best someone’s personal experience, but that itself stands as a strong counter to his argument 🤣

As an Eastern European myself, I’m a big fan of Žižek. Though he’s a respected academic and public figure, to me he perfectly embodies the slavic boomer—a more refined version of that one uncle we all have, who, at every party, drunkenly projects his deeply internalized coping mechanisms for surviving the trauma leviathan born of decades in a Soviet state.

Spent a week in China earlier this year and one of the biggest differences I noticed (Shanghai, Shenzhen) is security officers pacing in every single train at all times, such that they walk past you roughly every 5 minutes. Seem to take their job very seriously, look around to see that everything is in order. All trains and stations are clean, shiny, spotless. It costs $0.40 for a single subway fare in Shanghai.
