Multiplanetary residency will likely create complex legal conflicts. As humans settle on different celestial bodies, issues of citizenship, governance, and jurisdiction will arise, complicated by Earth-based laws, interplanetary treaties, and local governance. Current international space law, such as the Outer Space Treaty, prohibits national sovereignty claims but does not address private or multi-planet identity conflicts. Legal frameworks must evolve to manage overlapping authorities, tax systems, and civil rights for multi-planet residents, potentially requiring new supranational or interplanetary governance models to resolve conflicts and ensure fairness.
