The British Film Institute (BFI) certifies projects for tax reliefs like the Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit (AVEC) and the Enhanced AVEC (UK Independent Film Tax Credit), crucial for film and high-end TV (HETV) productions to invest in the UK. The Enhanced AVEC, effective from April 1, 2024, offers up to 53% tax relief on qualifying core expenditures, with claims starting April 1, 2025, capped at 80% of £15 million. Since 2011, the BFI’s role expanded to include video games and Extended Reality, but without increased funding, the five-fold rise in applications has strained the certification process.
