Both male and female birds of such species have an opening at the posterior end of their bodies called the Cloaca (which is the Latin word for “sewer”) which functions as a common opening for the digestive, reproductive and urinary tract. Bird copulation need only last a few seconds, to allow the cloacas of the male and female to touch in this so-called cloacal kiss. The male typically mounts the female from behind, depositing sperm from its cloaca into the female’s.
