As someone actually living in Iran, let me walk you through the amazing achievements of Trump's war:
1. He opened the Strait of Hormuz... which was already open before the war. Quite an accomplishment.
2. If the goal was weakening the regime, congratulations: you may have just replaced older hardliners with younger ones who have even more motivation for revenge after losing friends, family, and colleagues.
3. He reminded America's Arab allies in the Persian Gulf that no amount of weapons purchases can guarantee 100% protection from Washington.
4. He pushed Arab states in the Persian Gulf to take Iran more seriously, because geography isn't negotiable and the Strait of Hormuz isn't moving anywhere.
5. He damaged parts of Iran's energy and petrochemical infrastructure, which mostly means higher costs and more economic pressure on ordinary Iranians.
6. He helped drive up uncertainty in energy, fuel, fertilizer, and shipping markets, because apparently the global economy needed more chaos.
7. He sent a fascinating message to the world: countries without nuclear weapons can get bombed, while countries with them tend to be treated much more carefully.
8. Obama was criticized for years over billions linked to diplomacy. If this ends with a deal that indirectly puts tens of billions back into Iran's economy, I guess that's what they call winning.
9. He managed to unite some people who opposed the Iranian government by giving them something else to rally against: a foreign attack.
10. He once again proved that starting a war is much easier than explaining how it actually solves anything.
So let's check the results:
Thousands of Iranians dead.
American soldiers dead.
A more unstable Middle East.
Higher costs for everyone.
And a decent chance that everyone ends up back at the negotiating table anyway.
One of the most unnecessary wars in modern history: a war that was supposed to solve a problem, but so far seems to have made the problem bigger.
