zk-SNARKs (Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge) rely on a trusted setup and elliptic curve cryptography, offering succinct proofs that are small and quick to verify. However, the trusted setup poses a potential security risk if the setup parameters are compromised. zk-STARKs (Scalable Transparent Arguments of Knowledge), on the other hand, use hash functions and require no trusted setup, enhancing transparency. They produce larger proofs but offer better scalability and quantum resistance, making them more secure in the long term while maintaining privacy.
