Zero-knowledge proofs offer strong security guarantees, fast finality, and potential cost efficiency. zk-rollups are positioned as the ultimate scaling solution, but technical challenges—prover costs, hardware constraints, and developer adoption—remain. Whether zk dominates depends on whether these constraints are overcome before optimistic rollups entrench themselves. In the long term, zk’s cryptographic advantages may be decisive, but widespread adoption will require both user abstraction and developer-friendly tooling. The question is not “if,” but “how fast.”
