Sometime in late March—2018 or maybe 2019, I can’t quite recall the year when I first heard about city pop. I had just come back from work and was sitting on my bicycle outside, the cool spring air mingling with the sweet taste of melon ice cream from FamilyMart. 

I hadn’t even dismounted yet, lost in a quiet moment of peace, when the first notes of Mariya Takeuchi’s “Plastic Love” floated through the air from a nearby dormitory window. The melody seemed to wrap itself around me, blending with the night, and in that instant, I was completely spellbound. It made me think, why do we like the city pop so much?
