Pizza in its present form became popular in Naples, Italy in the 18th and early 19th centuries. A famous legend says that Pizza Margherita was created in 1889 by Chef Rafael Esposito in honor of Queen Margherita. The pizza was made using ingredients that represented the colors of the Italian flag.
