I think artists think the same kinds of things anyone else thinks while drawing. The difference isn’t some mystical mental state, but the ability to turn ordinary thoughts and emotions into something communicable.
Artists aren’t some separate race of people. Maybe being an artist is simply about being honest with those thoughts, without turning art into a performance of intellectual grandiosity.
To me, what matters isn’t the artist’s intention alone, but the friction between what they try to express and what people are able to interpret from the work at any given time.
That space in between is where symbols, culture, misunderstanding, and meaning are born.
