Have insufficiently guarded governance features triggered slash storms?
While rare, there are documented cases where governance mechanisms with weak checks led to “slash storms” — rapid, widespread slashing events. These occurred when parameters critical to validator liveness or signing were changed abruptly or maliciously, affecting a large subset simultaneously. Such storms can degrade network security and trust. Insufficient vetting, lack of quorum requirements, or absence of simulation tools are common culprits. These incidents highlight the need for robust governance guardrails including multi-layered approval processes, community review, and automated pre-proposal risk assessments to reduce the likelihood of governance-induced slashing cascades.
