Lots of reasons! In most jurisdictions, borrowing against BTC is not a taxable event. So a lot of people prefer that to selling. Also a good way to fund major purchases if you believe BTC will go up over time and don’t want to give up on your upside.

There’s a loan calculator on our site lava.xyz We don’t currently allow users to lend dollars (just borrow), but we will be adding that functionality soon!

Lenders are large capital pools we’ve onboarded, but the loans happen automatically via the contract. The loan terms are programmed into the contract. So if you default, your loan gets liquidated, the lender gets their capital back, and the rest is returned to you. Same thing if you get liquidated because of a price drop. However, you can always pay off your loan early with no fees or add more collateral if you’re getting close to the liquidation threshold.

Fort Oak is now officially my favorite restaurant in San Diego. Definitely go if you’re in town. Best dish are these lamb skewers. Instead of grilling with wooden skewers, the use whole cinnamon sticks. Adds this incredible smoky cinnamon aroma.

Toasted sourdough bread. Topped with whipped Greek yogurt + tahini, pomegranate molasses, pomegranate seeds, pistachios, and mint. Made these last night and they were excellent. Will be repeating soon.
