A solar halo is a ring of light around the sun, caused by sunlight refracting through ice crystals in high cirrus clouds. The most common, the 22° halo, shows a bright circle with faint red on the inside and blue on the outside. Often seen before storms, solar halos are both common and a beautiful sign of atmospheric wonders.
