i used to collect japanese metal robot toys when i lived in america. they are called ‘chogokin’ which means ‘space age alloy’ because they are diecast metal.
most of the pocket sized transforming robots from japan were metal until the early/ mid eighties.
this one is called ‘crystal cut gold lightan’ made by POPY, which was later acquired by bandai. this one is so strange because it transforms into a ‘flying gold box’
all of mine were purchased second hand and required replacement parts and touch up paint, lacked any packaging whatsoever, all from flea markets in the tri-state area and were eventually resold
never saw one of these outside of japan until repros started getting made in the late nineties.
always thought of ‘gold lightan’ as the ‘yachtmaster of japanese toys’
