The "Staircase of Death" is a climb along which prisoners of the Mauthausen concentration camp had to carry granite stones weighing about 50 kg. The guards forced the prisoners to carry loads up 186 steps of stairs, without caring about the scorching heat in summer or the cold in winter. In one working day, they had to do up to ten such lifts, walking one after another, which was especially dangerous, since many of the prisoners fell from powerlessness and dropped a stone on the one standing behind, and this triggered a domino effect, thereby many received injuries and crushed their limbs. Due to unbearable working conditions, every day someone died on these stairs. 1943
