Ulcers, previously a chronic illness linked to stomach cancer, were thought to be caused by stress and poor diet. Two guys in 1982 figured out it was a specific bacterial infection.
Treat with antibiotics, no ulcers, reduce chance of 2nd most common cancer at the time https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/medicine/2005/summary/
