The success paths of Afrobeats and Reggaetón are highly similar: both originated from marginalized regional roots and achieved globalization through digitization and cross-cultural fusion. Reggaetón paved the way for Afrobeats—the former proved the viability of non-English genres, and digital platforms changed the rules of the game, allowing Afrobeats to avoid being overlooked by the industry in its early stages. Both have benefited from the growth of streaming: Afrobeats accelerated its expansion through West Africa's population and commercial ecosystem (such as Nigeria's 206 million people), while Reggaetón leveraged the global appeal of Latin heritage.
