This is exactly what we are doing with Blitz. Blitz is a tiny 22x30mm M.2 FPGA accelerator card with a 8 Gbps PCIe interface. New circuits can be synthesized "on the fly" without removing the card, thanks to the USB2.0 connection available in the M.2 A or E keyed slots.
