Michael Smith pulled off the largest scam in the history of music streaming services. Now he is facing up to 60 years in prison.
Here's what the genius did:
— He created thousands of fake bands and artists;
— Generated hundreds of thousands of songs under their names;
— Came up with believable track titles;
— Used an army of bots to inflate the number of plays;
— At his peak, the guy was earning around $110,000 a month in streaming royalties.
In total, from 2017 to 2024, Spotify and Apple Music paid him around $10 million for songs by non-existent artists, listened to by bots.
