Since I was kid and far into mid 20s I lived thinking that people are relatively rational, just make logical errors or ignorant. Then multiple times in my life I observed multiple people e.g. erasing memory of a painful event, or confabulating to match their wordview (not political or ideological, just day-to-day stuff). Also I learned that when people make logical errors "somehow" 99% of the time they make errors in their own favor. I can't tell how common it is because it is hard to observe with clarity, but over time it completely shattered my assumption of "mostly rational humanity". We're more than we think like contemporary AIs inferring things trying to maintain coherence. I could have done it myself many times and like everyone else - wouldn't be able to tell or admit. Most importantly it fundamentally destroys idea of a rational, peaceful liberal order. Ignorance + corruption + stupidity + irrationality don't mix into stable rational civilization, especially in the age of exponential complexity.
