Mendut Temple: The Throne of the Radiant Buddha
Located just three kilometers from Borobudur, Mendut Temple is the starting point of a sacred straight line connecting three major Buddhist temples (Mendut, Pawon, and Borobudur). Built in the early 9th century by the Syailendra dynasty, it houses one of the most spectacular and best-preserved Buddhist sculptures in Southeast Asia.
Enchanting Uniqueness
While Borobudur offers exterior splendor, Mendut offers interior spiritual depth. Here's what makes it special in the eyes of the world:
Trio of Giant Statues: Inside the serene main chamber, stand three 3-meter-tall stone statues carved from a single block of stone. In the center sits Vairocana, the Heavenly Buddha, depicted seated with both feet touching the floor (Pralambapadasana position)—a very rare pose in Asian Buddhist iconography.
