Some people venture to the frontier, only to settle at the outpost. The mixed scent of opportunity and danger is energizing, even if they never realize their ambition. They tell themselves they’re just waiting for the right opening and maybe they are. But while those who play it safe come up empty-handed, they suffer the same social verdict in the eyes of the cultural majority. If you opt out of the dominant framework, you either have something to hide or you just couldn’t cut it – or so the thinking goes. After all, most of us are motivated by profit.
