For men's dress shoes, one hard rule I have is they need to be Goodyear welted. It's a bit harder to do, so you'll find that generally those shoes also have higher quality leather and overall better craftsmanship. Generally, the best shoe brands are based in England and Spain. There are a few Japanese and American brands that are very good. Omitting Italy and France wasn't an oversight. They generally use an inferior stitching method called Blake, questionable leather, and overall poorer construction. The watch analogy would be the difference between wearing a Rolex/Omega/Patek Philippe vs. Burberry/Versace/Gucci. This pair is from Spain. They're Carmina single monks. Personally, I love single/double monk shoes, but they're kind of polarizing. 🀣

I wear dress shoes daily and travel constantly, so for a while now I’ve been going with Wolf & Shepherd. The founder used to be an athlete and a designer for Adidas / Reebok / New Balance. He launched his own brand with the idea of making dress shoes as comfortable as sneakers β€” he even ran a marathon with them Not the fanciest, and the latest model has thicker soles than I find aesthetically pleasing, but as a daily driver they serve me well https://wolfandshepherd.com/products/closer-oxford?variant=40871362953289

I like Italians and as I don't use them much, I got just a pair of Clarks only for "serious" business trips. Which I still don't use much anyway. Most of my colleagues are German and they go dressed as if they're going for a hike 😁 Maybe I'll order these "special" Clarks to match them?

For me, it's just as important for my everday shoes to be Goodyear welted. They wear more quickly and I'd rather replace the soles than throw away shoes with perfectly good uppers. In the UK, I like my solovairs. If I were in the US, I'd go redwing.
