The Terminal displays top contributors to a repo, recent repo-wide efforts, and enables payments directly to repositories and contributors. Merit eliminates your administrative overhead. It’s global, fast, and compliant. Some ways an open source repo can use Merit: - A open-core project can grow their ecosystem and distribution - A sponsored project can engage new and existing contributors - A new, high-traction project can create a team and build together - And more… The Terminal is live today for any Github user to explore: https://terminal.merit.systems/ If you’re a repo owner, you can reach out today to install Merit on your repo. https://www.merit.systems/partner Read more about the Terminal and our future plans here: https://www.merit.systems/blog/launch

Today, we’re launching the Terminal: Pay anyone and any project on Github. Merit is the financial stack for open source software. We built the Terminal to make it simple for anyone to build enduring projects. Any Github user can use it today. Any open source builder can sign up for the payments beta. Open source software is powerful because it’s multiplayer. In what other industry can you build in the open with friends and collaborators from across the entire globe, and explore every layer of the stack? Merit solves the high-friction parts of open source development: paying contributors and building enduring projects. The Terminal enables multiplayer software with drop-in payments: builders can install Merit on their repository, and easily pay contributors using stablecoins.

If Open Source is going to lead us through an era of commodity silicon intelligence where 10x engineers become 1000x engineers, it's through humanity's most successful tool for society-wide abundance: capitalism. We need freer markets for software. Today there is immense friction between supply and demand for software. Walled gardens with extractive app stores, profit deserts created by Big Tech monopolies, and legal structures written in the 19th century stand in our path. Merit Systems is building tools to remove the friction of monetizing Open Source. We'll lay the rails for attribution so builders own the fruits of their labor. We're refining the factory for innovation and creating systems to focus the world's best minds towards humanity's biggest challenges. Read our manifesto here. Join the waitlist to get early access (use Github!) https://www.merit.systems/manifesto Our seed round was led by @a16zcrypto and Blockchain Capital with participation from Farcaster's very own @dwr.eth and others!

Today we're coming out of stealth and announcing a $10M fundraise to accelerate Open Source Capitalism. Open Source is civilization's greatest accomplishment. Where corporations fail to innovate as they scale, Open Source leads the frontier. All of the best technologies, from databases and web frameworks to cryptography and game engines, are created in the open. Software with zero-cost replication allowed massive teams to collaborate on the same technical artifacts. Open Source permeated the barriers between corps and allowed humanity's greatest minds to work on shared technical foundations. But funding Open Source has been a perennial challenge. Tragedy of the commons this, tragedy of the commons that. While we applaud the push to increase altruism directed at Open Source, banking on goodwill isn't our idea of a prosperous future.
