Mariana's Long Life
A novel by Dacia Maraini, an Italian national treasure and a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The story tells the life of Mariana, an Italian noblewoman in the 18th century: she became deaf and mute because of fear in her childhood. At the age of 13, she was ordered by her parents to marry her uncle Duke Piero and gave birth to five children. She read, wrote, and witnessed the rise and fall of her family in her own silence; In a meeting with her brother, Mariana accidentally learned the cause of her deafness and revealed the darkest secret of the family.
It was shortlisted for the Independent's Foreign Fiction Award and included in the Guardian's "1,000 Must-Read Novels". The film adaptation, directed by Italian director Roberto Faenza, won the 41st David Award for Italian Cinema.
