A spirit is a supernatural being, such as a ghost, fairy, or angel, that is considered to be beyond matter. In some religious beliefs, it is believed that the human spirit is actually the soul of the person and will continue to exist after the death of the human body. Historically, the spirit is similarly referred to as the "subtle" nature in contrast to the "gross" (coarse) nature in the famous final paragraph of Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica.
