Varanasi, India — The oldest continuously inhabited city in the world and Hinduism's most sacred. For over 3,000 years, pilgrims have descended the stone ghats to bathe in the Ganges, and the dying have come to be cremated on its banks — believing that to die in Varanasi is to attain instant liberation. Mark Twain wrote that it is -older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend.
