Tezos (XTZ) is a blockchain platform designed to run and support decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts, using a unique decentralized governance system based on the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) algorithm.
Tezos operates on Liquid Proof-of-Stake (LPoS), a unique version of PoS that only Tezos uses. Network participants with more than 6,000 XTZ can become delegates or "bakers", producing new blocks and confirming existing ones. Tezos smart contracts are written in the Michelson programming language. Gas is used to execute transactions on the network, which is paid for in the XTZ cryptocurrency.
XTZ is the native token of the platform, which has several uses: it serves as a reward for participating in the mining process or delegation of tokens, is used for voting in the Tezos decentralized governance system, and also serves as a transfer of value.
