Demand for beef, the staple food of Argentines, is falling as people switch to less expensive sources of protein like pork and chicken. With some experts predicting prices to rise by as much as 600% this year, steaks are not on the table for now. And while Argentines are only just beginning to think about changing their diet (they consume twice as much beef per capita as the United States), they have been finding ways to exchange the ever-cheapening peso for decades.
