the financial nihilism sentiment hanging in the air boils down to most young people <40 not being able to (reasonably) own property. really no need to complicate it beyond that.
if you can’t own your home, you will never be at ease. not enough space, can’t make changes to your liking, no rights, no stake in your local community. put simply, no permanence and therefore no meaningful relationships or presence. a skim milk version of life: still real, just bereft of much of what made it worthwhile in the first place.
this powerlessness is itself powerful. not for you, but for others who can wield it against you. these conditions are not an accident.
