Putting to use the FC Pro character limit with an Independence Day poem. I’ve named it “Independence, Reconsidered”. I think of it as a reflection of sorts, less of a celebration and more of a reckoning.
Thanks for reading.

Independence, Reconsidered
Another year draped in stars and stripes, celebrating a freedom that slips through our fingers.
We wave flags like blindfolds, while rights are peeled away beneath the crack and flash of fireworks, loud enough to muffle the gasps of a democracy on life support.
We grill over scorched earth, smoke rising from a planet sold for oil, as leaders fan the flames and call it growth. Trading forests for fortunes, turning heatwaves into headlines.
We cage the desperate in sunburned camps, behind fences lined with teeth, where hope wilts under floodlights. We call it defense, and treat compassion as a crime. We criminalize existence and call it law, masking cruelty as order.
What are we even celebrating? A court that crowns kings and forgets the people? A Congress hollowed of courage and truth, bending low to presidents and paymasters, trading conscience for coin, leaving constituents in the dust. A system where billionaires buy silence and sway, while the working class bleeds quietly in halls built for justice, now empty of it.
This is not freedom. This is a slow, managed collapse, draped in red, white, and blue. A flag stretched thin over the ashes of a nation that once promised liberty and justice for all.
But maybe from the ashes, together we can rise again. Not waiting, not hoping, but building.
Building a freedom that belongs to all, a justice shaped by the many. Carried forward in steady hands and daily acts of care, in the choices we make, the voices we lift, the small truths we live by, and the courage to hold each other accountable when those in charge refuse.
Because true independence is not found in fireworks or flags, but in the ongoing fight to make liberty real for everyone. 0 reply
