Useful things to do while being on maternity leave:
Read much (not only professional books, anything good for your soul)
Learn new skills or improve the actual ones (languages, musical instrument, painting)
Think a lot (what are my priorities in this life, what could I do better, etc.)
Make a blog, update social platforms and master new ones
Watch good films or quality TV shows
Visit interesting places in the city
Do fitness
And why not to write articles? :)
Of course the list can be broader, we just need some time to think of it.
