Did you know you can’t grow your own food on your own land for yourself without being subject to federal regulation? In the 1942 case Wickard v. Filburn, a farmer grew extra wheat strictly to feed his own livestock and family. He didn’t sell it, and it never left his property.Yet, the federal government fined him for violating farming quotas. The Supreme Court ruled against the farmer using mind-boggling logic: by growing his own food, he didn't buy wheat on the open market. The Court argued that if every farmer did this, the collective action would impact national prices. This New Deal-era ruling invented the "aggregation principle." It gives the federal government a blank check to regulate completely private, local activities under the guise of "interstate commerce".
