The founder of the Marzotto Group was Luigi Marzotto, who established a wool spinning mill in Valdania in 1836. He initially started the factory with a capital of 2,000 Venetian lire (equivalent to $100,000 in the 1990s). In 1842, he handed over the business to his son Gaetano. After the unification of Italy in 1861, Gaetano bought a spinning mill near Maglione and by the time of his death in 1910, the company had grown to over 1,200 employees.
