Mach’s core innovation is its optimistic escrow system that enables cheap, fast, and secure cross-chain swaps. Users either get the asset they want, or they get their money back. Mach assumes that solvers and traders honor their commitments, using cross chain messaging only to resolve conflict. Acting in bad faith will always lead to losing more value than can be gained, making Mach safe. Basically, we use math to make fraud unprofitable.

While Mach is the first protocol to offer optimistic swaps, crypto has long used optimistic architecture to improve performance. Leading Eth L2s such as Arbitrum and Optimism are optimistic rollups. Proof-of-Stake itself relies on assumptions very similar to those made by optimistic systems.
