When I was just a few days over 18, I went backpacking through Tibet with my friend Dave, the way a lot of young adults do when they haven't figured out their lives yet and think the answer might be found somewhere in the Himalayas. We'd heard the story from a guide in Lhasa, who told it to us the way locals do when they've told a story so many times they've stopped even bothering to sell it as true. Deep in the mountains, he said, there's a dog. Nobody knows how old he is, or what breed, or how he even got there. He's always asleep. Has been for as long as anyone can remember. But if you touch him, he'll speak to you, still asleep, eyes closed the whole time, and he'll tell you your future. Dave was skeptical. I wasn't. I don't know why, exactly, except that when you're 18 and have nothing better to do, a three-day hike to touch a sleeping dog sounds like a perfectly reasonable use of your time, and who could even make up a story like that? So we went.
