There's a phenomenon called "blue jets" that occurs above thunderstorms. These electrical discharges shoot upwards from the tops of thunderclouds, reaching altitudes of up to 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) into the Earth's atmosphere.
Blue jets are quite elusive and were only discovered relatively recently, adding to the mysteries of our planet's atmospheric phenomena!
