Control of a decentralized identifier (DID) can be proven off-chain via cryptographic signatures. A user signs a challenge message with their private key, and the signature is verified against the DID’s public key (published in a DID Document). Zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) can also attest to key possession without revealing it. These methods maintain privacy, reduce on-chain congestion, and are suitable for lightweight identity interactions in resource-constrained environments.
