standard imperial playbook: condemn abroad what you practice at home Trump condemns Iran for what he claims is their “custom” of shooting and violently killing peaceful protesters, while threatening military intervention to “rescue” them. Meanwhile, his own administration has: ∙ Deployed federal agents who detained, chased, shoved, sprayed or shot with projectiles people who were protesting peacefully ∙ Had a federal judge rule that agents’ use of force wasn’t justified and their version of events wasn’t credible ∙ Conducted raids that resulted in ransacked apartments and broken windows during Operation Midway Blitz ∙ Fast-tracked regulations to expand federal police powers against protesters, including criminalizing mask-wearing ∙ Actually deployed National Guard troops to Washington DC where they remained for at least a month, with protesters demonstrating almost daily against their presence ∙ Deployed National Guard troops to both LA and DC ∙ Only backed off deployments to Chicago, Los Angeles and Portland on December 31, 2025 after the Supreme Court rejected his request and he fought in court against local leaders’ wishes Iran’s security forces killing protesters = justification for US intervention US federal agents using unjustified force against peaceful protesters plus actual military deployment on American streets = maintaining law and order Both governments frame their crackdowns as responses to “violence” and “disorder.” Both face documentation showing they’ve used force against largely peaceful demonstrators The difference is purely geopolitical posturing, not principle
