listened to a 3hr podcast about the history of trader joe’s and now i can’t help but ask the checkout people if they know random facts about the store’s history
my favorite facts:
- TJ’s start in the 1960s was mainly as a hard liquor store (only way to compete with 7/11’s distribution was on liquor licenses due to difficulty to acquire w/ fair trade laws helping to guarantee profits on a regulatory level)
- TJ borderline started CA’s Napa wine craze by selling wine before it was cool in the late 60s/early 70s, which predated the 1976 Judgement of Paris wine competition where Napa wine out competed French wines and established Napa wine as high quality
- TJ only started stocking groceries in the late 90’s, before that it was more of a party store (wine, nuts, cheese) with the average customer only going in once per month, now it’s weekly
So far none of the employees at Trader Joe’s knew these facts (??)
